Learn how to use topical castor oil for at home support and treatment for digestion, pain and detox.
Castor oil is made from the bean of the plant Ricinus communis. Although, the exact mechanisms of castor oil is unknown, castor oil increases circulation and promotes detoxification to tissues and organs underneath the skin.
Castor oil is extremely absorbable through the skin. This overall improves lymphatic circulation. When applied topically, castor oil will improve digestion, reduce swelling of joints and extremities and improve detoxification.
Common Uses of Topical of Castor Oil
Topical castor oil has many uses. Firstly, castor oil on the abdomen supports digestion and detoxification. This is the most common way to use it in daily life. Secondly, castor oil can be used as an acute treatment for injuries and pain. Below are the most common uses of topical castor oil.
- Constipation, gas and bloating. This is best done applied topically to the abdomen prior to going to bed.
- Pain and inflammation. Apply topically to affected joints or extremities.
- Detoxification and liver support. Topical castor oil is excellent to promote lymphatic circulation and detoxification through the liver. Subsequently, this helps eliminate toxins, excess hormones, and cholesterol.
- Menstruation support, such as uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, and irregular periods.
Supplies Needed
Castor oil is cheap and the supplies needed are limited. aAs a result, it is a great at home treatment tool. Below, you can find the list of recommended or optional supplies.
- Castor Oil or Castor Oil Roller Bottle (organic, cold pressed is best)
- Cotton Flannel (optional), large enough to cover abdomen or affected area
- Hot Water Bottle or Heating Pad (optional)
- Old Towel or Old Cotton T-shirt (something you don’t mind getting stained)
Directions for Castor Oil Pack
- Pour castor oil onto a flannel cloth (enough to saturate).
- Place flannel on abdomen or other affected area.
- Place hot water bottle on top of the flannel. Relax for 30 to 60 minutes.
- Rest while the pack is in place.
- After removal, wipe the area clean and let any access oil absorb into the skin (this is a great time to put on an old t-shirt or use an old towel).
- The castor oil pack can be stored in a covered container in the refrigerator and may be reused numerous times
- Apply the pack 4-5 days per week.
Directions for Alternative “Quick & Easy” Treatment
This is my favorite way to use castor oil topically because it is quick and easy. By skipping the flannel, you can easily use castor oil as part of your night time routine.
- Apply 0.5-1 teaspoon (about the size of a quarter) of castor oil into the palm of your hand and rub it in clockwise rotation on your belly (or another affected area) until most of the oil is absorbed.
- Put on an old t-shirt or wrap the affected area in an old hand towel so that it does not stain other fabrics.
- You have the option to add a hot water bottle or heating pad this time.
- Relax and go to sleep!
